The 88 cents oil is after rebate. The sale price of $1.29 is equivalent to about $2.64 today. If you roughly double the prices in that 1996 advertisement you get today's equivalent. All in all, the ad prices are fairly close to today's value.88 Cents a quart Valvoline in the CPI calculator is still only $1.80. Should have stocked up!

Still, nostalgia is fun to explore. Back then, aftermarket vehicle parts were better quality in my opinion - MOOG, Timken, FELPRO, etc..
