I know that he should have gotten way more attention when he was alive, and all the hipsters think he's awesome now that he's gone. But I have to say that he was one of a kind, kind of like Jimi Hendrix or Bob Dylan. A true original.

He is irreplaceable. My wife is distantly related to June Carter. My wife's father is a photographer (from Northeast Tennessee) and he was on a first name basis with June. He photographed Johnny and June which I have a large copy of...a prized possession.

It was a huge loss when Johnny left, but if you heard "The Man Comes Around," then you could tell that he knew his time was near. Especially with his cover of "Hurt," which was a lot more powerful than Trent Reznor ever could have made it.

THE LAST GREAT REBEL

Achievements were many, recognitions were few, especially by the ever ignorant Nashville scene, who got another stomping from Cash, this time in a Billboard magazine full page ad where he flipped off the entire system's hypocrisy upon winning the "Best Country Album" Grammy in 1997 for Unchained. "American Recordings and Johnny Cash would like to acknowledge the Nashville music establishment and country radio for your support," read the caption, with a photo of a young Cash sneering with his middle finger extended.

"Hope you guys don't mind me posting the link to the video."

Thanks. I don't have many video or music links, but I now have that one.

I was a Johnny Cash fan too but my wife isn't and she asked me why I liked him. I didn't have a good answer for her and I'm guessing it's intangible. I mean, a lot of his songs have that same "train sounding" beat and he had a VERY limited vocal range. In fact, some songs are more "talking" than "singing". All of which makes me wonder why some people become famous singers and some who seemingly have more talent don't. It HAS to be more than singing ability or looks. It has to be "IT". But what is "IT"?

How high's the water, mama?
Five feet high and risin'

That is not one of his most popular songs, but I really like it. There is a youtube video somewhere where he performs that and the Bonanza theme song. I never knew there were even words to that Bonanza them. It was a shock when I heard him sing them.
