john deere smokes white

What engine? Mower or tractor? A huge cloud on startup that quickly goes away is typically just a crankcase that is too full of oil. Very common on vert shaft engines. Especially if they are parked nose down for any length of time.

hey it is a john deere 265 with ohv and cast cylinder liner and it has never done this before and i dont know if this has anything to an with it but the last time i change the oil i didnt change the oil filter. i change the oil in it 2 times this summer

A GT265? I had a GT262 some years ago. A 1992 model. It had a 17hp Kawasaki single. Really nice machine. That one would belch a cloud if you parked it nose down, They'll all do it if even slightly overfull of oil. The crankcase breather will squirt bursts of oil right into the carb.

It can also be diesel fuel, used by accident. Been there, done that. Are you sure, you are using gas?
Sounds like it's burning some oil to me. If the smoke was bluish-black then I'd think it's fuel. Never handled diesel myself to comment on.

Hmmm....Didn't change the oil filter?
Did you add the usual amount of oil? If so then that would make it overfull.
Although rare too much oil can cause engine damage due to severe spark knock or hydro locking the engine. This would be more likely in a vertical shaft engine.

I remember when I changed the oil in my friends LT166 w/the 17hp engine (I think). The level was at the upper end between the hash marks but apparently this is too high for the engine and/or for the hilly terrain he mows, as oil would blow through his crank ventilation hose that's located between the air filter and carb. The mower didn't smoke that I recall but rather choked as the oil soaked the air cleaner element. Things have been running fine since, with the level no higher than halfway between the hash marks on the dipstick.
