I've got a gator 850D ( Yanmar). The owners manual mentions 15w40 or 10W40 . This is the one vehical on the farm that gets started every day , but doesn't run for extended periods of time. Winter temps in these parts can at times go to 0 .

Would there be anything wrong with using rotella synthetic 5w40 ?

You'd be very well served with the Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w40.

I'm surprised the OM does not also mention HDEO 10w30. I have an '07 JD subcompact tractor with a little Yanmar 3-banger diesel, and the OM specifies ONLY 5w30 or 10w30 HDEO. So I use Shell RT 10w30.

The trend does seem toward thinner oils and not just for autos. I have an older/bigger JD with a 4-cylinder Yanmar in which I run 15w40. The OM offers a wide range of oil specs depending on the ambient temperatures.
