John Deere Cool-Gard II

Which Fleetgard are you currently using? They have extended and regulaar life. I think G-05 would be adequate for light to medium duty diesel use and would have about the same service life as the non extended life Fleetgard type.

It's the blue colored coolant says lifetime 150,000 miles i use it in my FORD diesel tractor, there was this one and another that's more of a life time but was way more money.

Good coolant?

OK you are using extended life. I think ES Compleat is an HOAT maybe similar to G-05. I'm just not sure what the organic acid is in Compleat. I don't think it is a Ford spec coolant, but I'm not really sure what is speced for your tractor or who the engine manufacturer is. Do you know what Ford recommends for your tractor?

Bottom line, I think G-05 could work in place of Compleat in a lighter-duty/shorter service interval application. On the other hand Compleat is a good choice and might have higher protection and service life for an HD engine assuming gasket compatibility. I think it's good you are not using Compleat OAT.

Fleetcool and Heavy Duty are about the only Cummins IAT coolants I know of. Both of which were Ford spec coolants, at least in the past. Fleetcool has a 2 year service interval unles you add an DCA-2 extender.

If there anything more confusing than automotive coolant, it'd have to be HD coolant.

Fleetguard coolants

Can you pass on some more info about your tractor? Like what the owner's manual says about coolant etc.

No not a ford spec coolant that i know of, it's a older FORD 4500 1975 3 cyl diesel, i make sure i run a good coolant with cavitation and electrolysis protection, and my FNH dealer said this is good stuff and i should check it with test strips once a year,i mixed it 50/50 just like the jug said so i should be good to go.

now if i check it in a year or so and the additive is weak i can just get a top off treatment right? thats all we do at work if that.

thanks for the info on this mechanicx

You are probably fine with using the Fleetguard Compleat. It is formulated to protect diesels well. I'm thinking the engine has steel gaskets so the OAT in it shouldn't be degrading any plastic gaskets. That's my understanding as well that you can use a test strip to check the nitrite level and add SCA as needed.

That's interesting. Texaco recommends Green in everything and all years except for 95 up GM (Dexcool of course), and ~'04-up Ford and Chrysler (Custom Made). I don't see where it says Custom Made is a tri-OAT? I figured it was G-05 being a silicated hybrid, but it does mention it has carboxylate inhibitors and I can't remember if benzoate, which G-05 has, is considerd a carboxylate or not but I don't think it is.

Anyway Havoline is recommending Green for most all models and years.
..Maybe they are playing it "safe" with the "green" recommendation..at the moment, I will say that I screwed up by mentioning "tri-oat" because I can't find the "link" to that reference at the moment..hopefully later..anyway the ingredients listed in the MSDS are the same as JD II..I find it interesting that the "custom made" is not back spec'ed in the same way as the G-05 was for ford and lincoln, until 1999 or 1998...But is the G-05 of present day still the same product as in 1995..I have my doubts since it hides it present formula behind the wall of NJTS#s
What it says to me is Havoline acknowledges that OATs may not be compatible with applications' gaskets that aren't FF with the OAT coolant. They are saying what I've been saying, to play it safe and not put OAT coolants in older vehicles.

Also it is up to the engine manufacturer to verify and backspec coolant. Havoline is not doing it. So far, like you mentioned only, Ford has back-speced G-05.

Forget about MSDS. As we seen you can go through various MSDS for the same coolant and find didn't ingredients. the MSDS do not list all th ingredients and neither doe the ingredient list on the coolant bottle. G-05 is a standard formula and they all contain the full formulation.
I've read that Ford has only back-speced G-05 for engines built since 1999-if you have some info or a link for that I'd like to see it-I'd personally like to run G-05 in my '89 7.3 engine-but I've read it may not be compatible w/all the gaskets.

i have an '89 & '90 superduty and they have been running on coolgard for almost 20 years, and from here forward looks to be coolgard II. deere says its backward compatitable with its own coolgard, so i don't see the issue

I think G-05 would be OK in a pre-99' Ford. Really the only thing of issue is that G-05 contains benzoate, but that is an inhibitor that has been around awhile and was used in some Green. I'd probably stick with Green but I don't think G-05 would deteriorate any of the gaskets.

I have about 10gal of the CGII and was going to swap over, but after checking my factory pH of 8.7 I don't think I will switch over and save it for the time being.
