I bought a John Deere 757 earlier this year when it had 386 hours on it and it now has 405 hours on it. Ever since I owned it, I noticed the starter has to crank a long time (3-5 seconds) before it will start if it has been sitting. After running if you try to start it, it fires up instantly. I have replaced the diaphragm fuel pump and nothing has changed. Any suggestions?

Make sure the gas cap is venting ok. I had a JD lawn tractor that for no reason was hard to start cold. Was checking the gas line and saw the gas tank sucked in. Gas cap was clogged shut, NO venting. Fixed cap and all was good. Took my air hose and popped the gas tank back out.

I’ll check that, thanks.

Replace the fuel line. Most likely the line has crack(s) and sucks air.

Cracked fuel lines don't suck air, they leak gas.
3-4 seconds or so is pretty normal cranking time for a cold engine that has been sitting for a week or 2. It takes the fuel pump at least 2-3 seconds just to fill the float bowl. IMO you don't have a problem.

If that sounds normal, I’m ok with that if that’s the way these are. Just considerably longer cranking than my other OPE.

3-5 seconds of cranking before starting is not unusual. I wouldn't be concerned.

Choke working properly. I have been keeping it at idle, but I’ll try half throttle next time. Yes, Kawasaki 25hp.
I have two of those engines. A 2011 JD X320 and a 2021 Kubota 2290-48.
Both owners manuals state to advance the throttle 1/2 to 3/4 when starting cold.

I switched to iridium plugs on both which seemed to help starting.

Do your own research on plug numbers, I used NGK BPR5EXi
