Just bought a used 4runner that had 54,000 miles on the clock. I jiffy lube sticker indicated that it was due for an oil change 2k miles ago, meaning I changed right at 5k. I can only assume its dino 5w30, but can't be sure. 1GR-FE V6 4.0 engine.

//edit: driving conditions are in extreme cold in alaska. Changed oil in a garage, it was -45 outside at the time....

Great report. Hard to say with precision how long it was. So tell us more about driving conditions? How far do you drive? How do you warm it up?

My drive to work is typically about 20 miles, ending with about 5 miles of mountain road and trail in my driveway. Car is typically kept heated with a block heater, but I notice that the oil cap has lots of condensation in the cold weather, no matter what. I assume its because the filler neck is so long and the rushing cold air never lets it properly heat up (the filler neck).

the jiffy lube sticker said that it should be changed at 52,000 and the guy i bought it from said he didn't change it yet, so I'm pretty sure the oil sample had 5k miles on it.

I am at 56,000 now and have switched to M1 5w30.

silicon at 6ppm was a nice low number.

Morning warm up at extreme cold is typically 10-15 minutes with the heat off. when the heat is on, the engine will never reach operating temperature. My girlfriend would drive it about half the time and do start-and-go.

the garage was heated, but even a heated garage isn't very warm...

temps lately have been 0-ish, so warmup isn't so long. Thinking about sampling at 3k, just out of curiosity.

I've heard this engine to be extremely clean, and am considering extended intervals, with a filter change and top off at 5k.

Searches haven't indicated too many others with my engine, certainly not with a long history, so I will probably keep up on them.

The engine I have is the 1gr-fe. it is the standard 4.0 liter used in the 03-current 4runner, 05-current tacoma, and all FJ cruisers. It is equipped with VVT-i, and mechanical lifters. I think that I personally will be most interested in viscosity, I am wondering about oil shearing. I know it won't be serious, but this oil stuff is addicting, knowing all this "secret" info about my engine!

Pennzoil always seems to show great reports, but I'm sure nearly anything would show a great report in your Toyota. Those seem to be great wearing engines.

Moly looks too low to be pennzoil, at least in its current formulation. I'm wondering if this could be something akin to Formula Shell oil. Perhaps pennzoil bulk is different from pennzoil OTC? I dunno.

Whatever it is, looks like the engine is in good shape.

I was thinking exactly the same thing-this looks just like formula shell-Pennzoil has a lot more moly in it.

Either way, looks great, you bought well!

looks like the 5w30 dino works fairly well even in those temps. i would switch to syn in the winter and dino in the summer

ditch the M1, not worth the $$ imo.. go with penzoil platinum if you feel like you need a syn

what about the transmission??? thats the most important part of your truck.. i would change it all out for a synthetic like amsoil in those temps. of not amsoil find redline or M1 atf (make sure its fit for T-IV atf) .. your transmission works harder than your motor.
