Jeep Liberty ??

I've been reading that 2012 might be the last year for the Liberty. I'm considering buying another one and was wondering if the Pentastar engine will be offered along with a different automatic transmission? Or will they just stick with the 3.7L and the 4 speed auto, and drop the Liberty with the old engine and drive train. Anyone have any clues?

the liberty isn't going away.

the liberty and compass are getting redesigns for 2013 based off a new fiat platform i believe. the liberty will be a stretched version

I checked with the dealer I bought mine from. This was the reply I got. "Lots of rumors, we don't even know".

I hadn't seen that info. I was curious about the 2012 Liberty. The engine and transmission specifically if they'd upgrade that or stick with the current combination. I guess I'll wait and see. I posted on a Jeep board yesterday and got no replies at all.

i just did some researching and found out that the redesign originally planned for 2013 in Chrysler's product planning has been bumped up a year; so the redesign will be for the 2012 model year that you're asking about. i can't seem to find much info about it except for the fact that'll it'll be based off a fiat midsize car platform like i said above. but expect an all new interior, exterior, suspension, and probably better NVH. one of my sources says a new 3.2L engine will appear one model year later in 2013. so i would probably wait it out another year and get the new engine which will bring better fuel economy.

Most dealers won't have a clue. Even if they do, they won't tell you. If there is a next gen Liberty, I think it can only get better. Chrysler has been quite busy lately, and a lot of their updated models look quite promising.
 
I saw most of the articles online. I'm going to have to wait, there are lots of rumors, nothing concrete, which is typical though. I was hoping for the Pentastar engine, an upgrade to the transmission, and the same 4x4 options they offer for the Liberty, Select Trac II or Command Trac II.

I want RWD when the 4 WD system is off, I don't want AWD or FWD. I have a feeling I'm going to be disappointed since they'll probably go away from RWD and leave that to the Wrangler, Rubicon, etc.

u could always step up to a grand cherokee, unless that's too big
 
IIRC the GC isn't RWD either, I think its FWD in the normal driving mode. At least that is what the sales person told me. I have to read up on it. Honestly it's a little too big and too much $$$.

Once again, salesperson (dealer) was clueless. GC and Durango ARE still RWD.

Thanks, that's why I said I had to look into it. When the time comes if I don't like what they've done to the Liberty I'll have my wife test drive a GC. If they keep the Liberty 4x4 RWD for normal driving I'll be a happy camper. If they put the 3.6 Pentastar and a 5 or 6 speed AT I'm a buyer.
 
I was really hoping they would drop the new 3.6L Pentastar into the Liberty/Nitro, but alas they stayed with the tried and true 3.7L The 3.7L is a good engine, it's just not very fuel efficient.

From what I have read they will be replacing the Liberty/Nitro altogether...not sure if that means it will be dropped completely or a new Gen released.

If it is a new Gen released expect it to be a very different animal than today, with it being much more car based like all the cute-utes out there. Best bet is to look at the new Grand Cherokee / Durgango......Everything I've read is very positive!

I have a feeling it is going to be a totally different animal as you said. I don't like the Durango at all, the GC is a possibility if the Liberty turns into a "cute-ute" as you say. I've even tossed the idea of a Wrangler around. Time will tell, I was hoping someone had some inside scoop, but I guess its still too early in the year.
 
Update: My wife shocked me and actually likes the Jeep Wrangler 2 door version. I might just go test drive one with her. I always liked the Wranglers for a fun ride but never gave them much thought. They are going to see some changes for 2012 and get the Pentastar engine. Something we might consider if she really likes it.
 
For sure wait for the Pentastar. You must not have any kids. My wife wouldn't even let me look at a 2 dr. She likes the 4 drs.
