When did they start putting diesels in jeeps and are those engines any good? Who makes them? I saw one a few days ago and it was putting out black smoke every time he got on the throttle and he wasn't even speeding up very fast.

The engine in the Jeep Liberty is a VM engine. 2.5 was in Uk models only and then the 2.8 was fitted. The Liberty only had the 2.8 as they had the diesel.version a cew years after the UK.

It is a good engine. Capable of mega miles if looked after.

If it was smoking a lot everytime he pressed the throttle it has been poorly maintained. EGR more than likely gummed up or knackered and it is probably overdue an airfilter.

My 2007 Taxi (TX4) has over 170k. Has a little puff when given a bootfull after running round town all day.

But it gets regular maintenance.

Those poorly maintained smoke like a chimney.

Same.engine fitted to European Chrysler Voyager and Grand Voyager for years. First the 2.5 now the 2.8.

More of an.old school.diesel

Jeep put a 2.0L diesel in the Patriot for export vehicles. Not available in the US however.

The Jeep liberty had a diesel in it . It was called the CRD . It got poor mileage , wasn't reliable , and beat up the 545re trans . How do I come to this conclusion? I had one . Looked good on paper , sucked in the real world.

Back in the 1986 ish when the Jeep Cherokee came out they did have turbo diesel option made by Renault.

They had them in libertys for a couple years. Put super low rolling resistance tires on, kind of goofy for an SUV.

Maybe the one you saw was chipped and/or they've been running to mexico for fuel.

yeah it was a jeep liberty. What years did they make those and do they still have the dieseel option?

I think they were only for sale in 2005 and 2006.
