Jeep Cherokee 4.0 oil choice

So, just like title says, I have a Jeep with 4.0, vehicle has just shy of 70k on it. Would MaxLife 10w40 or 30 be good? What do the 4.0 engines like oil wise? Auto trans and going to see what ATF and transfer case fluid oil I should use. Thank you in advance. Jeep will be driven regularly also

My vote is Quaker State conventional or high mileage 10W-40. You'll get many suggestions for HDEO 5W-40 too. Really can't go wrong with OIL. Seriously, pick a bottle you like and use it.

Yeah, I have a bunch of SL 20w50 and 10w40 MaxLife. Maybe use that up

Dang, lucky you. Your jeep will love that stuff. I'd definitely use that up first. The SL 20W-50 is Maxlife as well as the 10W-40?

Yep, courtesy of Autozone 12' and 13' oil blowouts. Even have some SM Peak 10w40. The 20w50 is very early or real old MaxLife as sticker on jug is so old LOL!

Yes Maxlife 10w40 is good, if you like syn my fav is Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40.

What are you hoping to get by running a 40 or 50 weight? used oil analysis of Pennzoil Conventional 10w30 have been excellent on our engines. The only thing you're going to get with anything thicker is a small hit in fuel economy.

Edit: And 70 at that? Mine is at 230k, running neither a 40W or any High Mileage oil. Many others out there too.

DoubleWasp; I could cut the 20w50 MaxLife with some 0w30 M1 I got for $6 a jug. It's a 4.0 online six, and as dad said " you probably aren't going to hurt that engine"

For several years I ran Rotella 15-40 in a couple of Jeeps I owned.

About 2 years ago I switched my 2005 TJ to QS Defy 5-30.

Depending on what year your Cherokee is, determines what ATF to use.

For transmission fluid: If it is the regular Cherokee it will have the Aisin-Warner AW4 automatic which uses Dexron III fluid. If it is a Grand Cherokee it has the 42RE transmission which calls for ATF+4 fluid.

Transfer case: I use ATF+4 in the 2WD/4WD NP242 "Selec-Trac" transfer case in my '96 grand Cherokee. As long as it isn't the full time only "Quadra-Trac" NP249 4WD transfer case (which I believe was only offered on Grand Cherokees), I think you can use either Dex III or ATF+4 in the transfer case. The full time only Quadra-Trac transfer case (NP249) will take a special fluid.

When I had a 1999 Cherokee I used Dexron III in the transfer case and transmission.

I run 15w40 in my Jeep summer an 5w-40 winter. The flat tappet cam should have about 1200ppm zddp. HDEO has close to that. Valvoline Racing 10w30 also has good zddp numbers if you want to run the suggested 10w30. Jeep 4.0L runs hot 212 40w should thin enough at operating temp. I have a 2000 cherokee yes dreaded head crack.

D3 is not a full synthetic fluid. ATF+4 is. I don't take chances with lockup converters.
