Getting mixed replies from other forums on this transmission behind a Jeep 4.0L engine in a 98 Grand Cherokee...what do you guys think?

It's not considered one of the ZJ's strong points, but I have a '96 with 83000 miles on it and haven't had a problem yet (knock on wood).

I've heard a lot of bad stuff about this transmission, though I imagine it could last a long time if properly cared for. The AW4 on the other hand seems almost indifferent to abuse.

It's not bad, just needs attention. My last 94' ZJ was at 120k and it was shifting fine. I did not do much for the transmission either.

My current on has 86K and seems fine also.

Best thing you can do for them is regular maintenance. I would drop the pan and change the fluid every 20-30K just to be same.

Aren't most of the complaints with this trans in terms of electronics and not with durability?? That is, they don't "break" ..but rather malfunction?? That's the impression that I got. It was more the complexity of the thing and not that it was weak.

Not that this alters the feeling you get when you need to have it repaired ..but provides some consolation

Just never, ever in any situation put Dexron III in there! That is a death sentence for any Chrysler transmission... Other than that, just keep it maintained, add a transmission cooler if it doesn't have the towing package and you'll be good. OH! Make sure to use a Mopar filter only!
