My 14 year old MTD 46" Yard Machine mower has finally gone caput. I’m considering the purchase of a John Deere LA115 (though I’d really like to have a JD X300, but I don’t need it). Can anyone give me any first-hand experience/impression with this mower?

I haven't seen any major complaints about them. Tufftorq K46 trans, twin blade 42" deck, manual/mechanical PTO. A good machine for you for $1700 given your MTD lasted you 14yrs.

LOTS of problems in my area with the Tuff-Torq hydrostatic drive. Google and read for yourself. I would buy the LA105, save a few bucks, and have a reliable manual transmission.

It's similar to a Simplicity machine, but with a Hydrogear T2 trans, different deck, etc. Snappers and Simplicitys are usually tops when it comes to operator comfort, controls layout, etc. You'd probably find it to have better quality bearings and hardware then you would on a $2000 MTD or Sears product.

I thought the LA series JD has an even less durable hydro called the Tuff Torque T 20 or 30 series?
It seems you either have to go with a manual trans or high dollar hydro-the entry level ones are full of problems after 100 hours. Even the X300 uses the Tuff Torque 46-you have to step up to the X320 to get the K58 for which I can find no complaints on the K58
