Have you seen these bypass oil filters on ebay? They remind me of a motor guard bypass oil filter. I don't think they would work as well. They seem to be missing the center tube. It seems most of the oil would channel in the middle and bypass your bypass.

Yes, I've seen them. Never bothered to tell the guy to show what he's using inside. He says, "like Frantz" ..
"A tightly wound cellulose filter inside a cotton bag with a metal eyelet for easy filter removal is supplied FREE!"
Sounds more like a peculator/drain field type filter.
So what's inside the bag? He says that you can use tp .."but not as good" ..so does it fit. Shannow is having trouble fitting Oz rolls to the MG ...I'm sure that we're going to have trouble fitting USTP to some OZ standard container.
Not to mention shipping to the western hemisphere.
Otherwise, they're just fine. Kinda remind me of the 40's and 50's filter canisters.

In answer to your question re the centre tube; this filter is not like the Frantz and instead of the centre tube it has a taper seal in the base of the cannister which effectively seals the inlet from the outlet. The pressure of oil on top of the roll keeps it firmly in place and it really does a good job of cleaning the oil. It is an idea that has been around for a long time and Kleenoil filters use it also. Why use toilet paper when you can use a filter made of densely wound coniferous long fiber wood pulp paper
It seems to me if I get some stretch from the paper before it tears at the perforations it is a good paper. I haven't had any trouble with tissue migration in the Frantz or Motor Guard. If I had concerns I would install a secondary filter tissues can't go through. It would make no sense to me to put a high quality roll of TP in a sock. It might be good for marketing to have an element that works as good as TP that you can call something else. Then you lose the people that won't buy the filter unless it takes TP. It's a hard choice to make. One guy bought a Motor Guard after I told him it would take the Gulf Coast junior element. Thats a roll of janitorial supply paper in a sock. Down here in Fort Hood the Army tested some filters. One of them had a plastic cartridge. Open it up and there is a roll of TP that you can tear off at each sheet. I haven't checked out the Australian filter. I think it did use TP. If it is the same company it also had a copy of the Frantz 3 stacker. As some of you know Frantz started with a cartridge that replaced the element in the stock bypass filter. Then they came out with the whole filter. It looked like it might have been made by the same company that made the old Fram bypass filter. About 1982 a Frantz-Amsoil dealer in Salt Lake City sold me a Frantz Oil Cleaner and lubricants for a new Honda Civic. I saw race cars around the shop and a Frantz museum. He had all the old Frantz.
The filter was changed and a quart of Amsoil added every 4,000 miles. We just grabbed some paper with a pair of pliers and pulled it out. The Motor Guard is by far the easiest to service if it can get air up into the filter and let the oil drain back into the sump. Being the easiest to service means something to me because I have several filters and the ones on the equipment at work.
I ordered some filters from Motor Guard. I think they like for me to sell them but they want to cover their rear. I threw them in engine cleaner. If I had known the coating was going to be so tough I would have left it alone. The cleaner doesn't harm the cast aluminum but it makes the epoxy turn loose. Motor Guard knows that if you have a new car or just had the engine or transmission overhauled you better hope there are no problems if you have a TP filter on it. What can happen is they might say, "Sir, we found the problem you machine is full of TP". It can happen. All Motor Guard has to say is we don't sell oil filters. Probably the reason I haven't had any problems is my customers are well versed on oil filters.
