Linspire signs deal with Microsoft

From the article (bullet-pointed it for easier reading):
As part of the agreement between Linspire and Microsoft, the companies have agreed to cooperate in several areas...
  • Linspire will work with Novell and Microsoft to develop open-source "translators" that allow Open Office and Microsoft Office users to share documents more easily.
  • The company has also licensed Microsoft's RT audio codec to make its Pidgin IM (instant messaging) client interoperable with Windows Live Messenger and other Microsoft products.
  • Linspire pledged to add support for Windows Media 10 in future releases of its Linux OS distribution
  • Linspire also agreed to make Windows Live Search the default search engine in Linspire 5.0

  • A-HA! THAT'S why Microsoft is headed down this path...to use Windows Live search instead of Google! It's all about pushing it's Windows Live initiative in places that it cannot go without external legal and/or political pressure!

MS knows it's posterior is being handed to them on a silver platter from Google Inc when it comes to web services and it also knows it cannot compete with Yahoo and Google in this space as customers turn to Y & G time and time again, thus this whole Linux patent infringement mechanism to push it's products down Linux-only paths.

The legal dep't of MS is applying pressure and as a result is successfully achieving what the marketing arm of Microsoft has not been able to do so far: make Linux adopt Microsoft's products.

This whole thing just started to make a LOT more sense now.

The seven users of Linspire rest easy.

Financial terms of the agreement between Linspire and Microsoft were not disclosed.

Is it odd that the two most recent companies signing deals are also the financially weakest; odds are money is flowing TO the Linux vendors not FROM them to MS for licensing patents.
