I thought CT would've been in the top 3.
While i'm not a big fan of gov't programs, they should do mandatory re-tests every 2 years for driving. Nobody understands rules of the road anymore.

quote:

Drivers in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states did worst. Twenty percent of test-takers failed there.

The state of Rhode Island leads the nation in driver cluelessness, according to the survey. The average test score there was 77, just eight points above a failing grade.

Those in neighboring Massachussets were second worst and New Jersey, third worst.

Speeding increases both the likelihood of an accident and the severity of the crash, the company added, citing research from IIHS.

How can they make this assumption when the seed limit varies gretaly from state to state. If I am traveling 75 in a 65 zone, I will get hurt worse than someone traveling 75 in a 75 zone?

I will also add that, while I have never traveled very far west, I have traveled up and down the east coast multiple times. When traveling from New York to Florida, the other driver's habits seem to get worse as I get further south.

"If I am traveling 75 in a 65 zone, I will get hurt worse than someone traveling 75 in a 75 zone?"

You're missing the point: the issue is the DIFFERENCE in speed increases the likelihood of an accident.

The absolute speed factors into the SEVERITY of the crash, not the likelihood of there being one.

I will give one thing to southern drivers. They are much more courteous when they come upon a funeral procession. They pull over and show respect for the dead. The idiots up here don't seem to care and seem to get upset when they are held up by a funeral. Man of us yanks have no respect for the dead.

Totally agree. Other than DC metro (where when traffic is moving, its OK), the drivers everywhere else south of Phila. are HORRIBLE.

My GF is from St Thomas - not a driver's paradise, and not a place where you ever go over 45 mph. And she HATES how terrible DE drivers are!

benj, I'm not disagreeing with you, but I define speeding as going over the speed limit, whatever that may be, not how fast you are going.

The quote is somewhat misleading in that it muxes up the definition of speeding.

besides, in Texas, speed limits are for the D@** yankees who have no clue as to where they are going......

I for one find Texas drivers much more courteous. We may run over you, but we'll wave afterwards.

What do you expect when English is a second language, Illegals get drivers licences, and the new batch of teens drive like total retards

Well I think legislation has alot to do with that.. in Kentucky (where I used to live) you have to pull over for a funeral. In Maine, there is no such law. When I first moved there I thought my first wife was nuts when she freaked out because it never even occured to me to pull over for a funeral traveling in the opposite direction on a 4 lane highway (US25E).

i am offended by this remark. dc drivers are truly terrible aholes. if the light is green, they creep up on it, brake a look both ways. if the light is yellow or red they give it more gas and run the intersection. (yes this makes sense in a demented way but wouldnt it be smarter to stop running the reds?)

signal for a merge? are you stupid? do that around here and they cut you off. cant have someone else getting ahead of you. i am important **** it. i work in WASHINGTON, DC.

oh i see a red light. i think i will stop about 1/2 mile back and creep up on the light over the next 2 minutes.

no left turn? surely they dont mean me.

it has an R, so i should be able to backup for missed off ramps right? it wouldnt have an R unless they didnt want you to use it.

and yes, i have picked up bad habits from driving around here. monkey see monkey do. help me.

We must have some of those transplants here, thing is when they try to do this to a 3/4 ton longbed CC truck , they tend to get either forced off the road or they back off real quick..

I noticed that also while in Texas. I didn't know what was going on. Every car for a mile or so was pulled over.

That could be a possible explanation except that they do this in places where there is no yield sign and enough acceleration lane to get a Yugo up to speed..

Well, for some, merging into a swarm of assault vehicles in attack formation and on an attack vector is not a natural act.

Keep in mind that we're an aging population and that perception and reflexes are reduced somewhat from peak. Then you take into account only average or below average driving ability ..and what do you have? We're perceiving this from a position that takes driving seriously. For many it's a simple means to an end ..pretty much a blur in the rest of their day. They don't necessarilly enjoy it, nor do they see any need to improve their skill level beyond the point where their needs are statisfied.

The best and newest style in on ramp is sorta configured onto a curve where the merging traffic and prevailing traffic end up in a very wide right lane that creates a "no man's land" easing the transition in high traffic density situations. It appears to give you the impression that neither vehicle has clear title to the road ..or rather that you have "rights" to be where you are.

Sure the Northeast has the dumbest drivers. It's because everybody is old and hasn't had to study for a driver's test in 50 years.

Oregon #1 Washington #2 That is truly a scary thought about the rest of the country. The way so many people drive around here.
