Hello fellow BITOGers...

So it's been a few years since I've done much contributing. I moved to northern VA a few years ago and getting a place with a garage anywhere close to DC costs a fortune so much of my DYI car care had to come to an end. I just wanted to thank you folks that keep this forum interesting. Even though I've no place to do car work for the time being it's a bit therapeutic to read through the threads here. It's something I really enjoyed. May the can cutting and internet armchair filter diagnosing never end! ;-)

thanks guys

Feel the camaraderie. I have relatives in Virginia who don't know which end of a screwdriver to grasp. Kira

haha! I just had a very similar situation with a friend's 2004 Honda Element in Colorado. I was out there visiting and he said a weird sound happened every time he braked. Well, for starters they were all worn to nothing, rotors were completely ruined, and one caliper was frozen. It was one of those situations that just got worse. The deeper I went the more I found wrong. I even had to replace a brake hose. Took me the better part of a full day and a couple trips to the parts store, but I got him all fixed up! The rust issue isn't as bad out there. They use magnesium chloride on the road instead of salt.

Thanks Kira!

I dare you to "bootleg" some maintenance. I recommend your work parking lot at 7 am on a sunday. Just for the thrill.

A noble dare, but my job doesn't actually have a parking lot.

Parts? Parts? I don' need no steengkeeing parts.

Mostly because I can't get them.

I just "made" a radiator hose, from a bit of rubber irrigation pipe reinforced with polythene/fibreglass packing tape and wrapped with electrical wire (using common whipping).

Holding so far, but the prognosis is guarded at best.

Making one's own radiator hose is a little too "1800's" for me.
The stagecoach has been coming by more than once a month for a while now.

....assuming you're not pulling our collective leg.

Not round here. Takes time and contacts.

Re leg-pull, I suppose I should get a picture of the pipe before it pops. Digital cameras, smartphones, etc are readily available.

Anything useful is more difficult.
