How do they work?

The common concensus from the MMO experience I shared, seems that the long period of all-out driving helped the car, not necessarily the MMO. But I am not so sure.. the MMO made it overfull by a half quart, and I wonder if it could have cleaned up something stuck in the engine.

This brings me to ask what an Italian Tune-Up actually does do for a car, so, let's discuss!

Repeatedly running it up to redline and long periods of high-speed driving should (in theory) burn off any contaminants in the oil, break up any carbon or other build-up, and make sure everything is "fully utilized" (brakes, fuel system, cooling, etc).

It's Italian, so it goes bada bim, bada boom and then it does "the thing" that only wise guys know what it is.

Bippity boppity???

I have to wonder what the ECU's do these days on Italian tuneups. Fuzzy logic, learning how the driver drives, etc. For all I know it might have some loop in which it might cut fueling if it "thinks" the engine isn't being run hard enough to clean out deposits. Or maybe it learns that it needs to be lazy, just like its driver.

??

Clarification: When the quart, or 32oz., of MMO was added to crankcase oil level, it was then overfull by a half quart, said level.

It's nice to give the car WOT every now and again to cycle the injectors through their full range, and hopefully blow out any contamination. On VVT-equipped engines, it also just may clean out any gunk from the VVT passages in the cam phasers if done long enough.

That's all speculation, though. Right or wrong, it is fun to bury the right foot and watch the speedometer spin higher...

My mom tends to drive her Grand Marquis like a retired person, well because she is. Every couple weeks I will take it out and rail on it and she always remarks how much better it drives after I take it out. So there is a sound logic to the theory.

Mazda wants our techs to do a Italian style tune0up on RX-8s when they come in with carbon fouled spark plugs before we replace the plugs, battery, and starter for a no start.

i will comment on that, My RX8 always runs better after a long hard run or long 80 mph interstate drives. i italian tune it up every time i drive it. I find the rotary is almost like a 2 stroke dirtbike, if you put put it around it kinda loads up (isnt as responsive) when your run it hard it cleans up and runs very well. It loves fuel like a 2 cycle as well.
