Lonnie, I hope you get to see the good you did springing up as the years go by. Next door neighbor of twenty-eight years ago did the middle age crazy thing, leaving a wife and four kiddos to fend for themselves. Long story short, keeping an Opel GT and a '77 Volare wagon running long enough for the last one to leave home and the single mom to support herself and a new vehicle was the right thing for me to do, but the contributions to society those four kids are now making is a huge bonus. At last count, one teacher, one IBM exec's wife, one RN, and an attorney (well, three out of four's not bad). Still get weepy seeing the grandkid pictures at Christmas time. Doing the right thing is not always so obviously rewarded, but it is STILL the right thing.
