I have one of the notorious Troopers (1998) that burn oil - one quart every 400-500 miles. Have always run 10w30 but topped off a few times with 5w30 and noticed it seemed to burn less oil than when topping off with 10w30. Seems odd as the thicker 10w30 would seem less prone to burn off. Anyone have any thoughts?

In simple terms, thinner oil gets 'into' the ring area easier, and holds an oil film there.

I don't know exactly how this works, but I've read about it happening many times on here - it's a known effect thinner oils have on some engines, but it does not work for all engines....

My friend owns one of these engines in his Acura SLX. I went to 15W40 Rotella in it and also changed the PCV valve. It reduced the consumption down to a qt. every 1500 miles
