Hello ....

I have 4 pairs of jack stands from the old shop days, but none will really work will on the uni-body of a BMW.

I have seen pictures of jack stands whose saddles are perfectly flat. I would love to find a few pairs of this type in at least a 3 ton capacity.

I have looked into this once before, and have had no luck. I am wondering if the pics I have seen where of custom made jacks stands.

I do not care if they are of pin or ratchet nature, just so long as the saddle is flat or only slightly arched.

Cheers!

With an independent suspension car I usually place one fork of the saddle underneath a lower control arm bolt. I tried using a dinky floor jack on the subframe (the lifting area was about 3" in diameter) and it put a nice dent in there, so I wouldn't trust jack stands on the subframe either.

The only jack stands I've seen with relatively flat saddles were of the cheap 2-ton variety you'd usually see on sale at WalMart.

Checked with any local welding shops about building whatever mount you want welded onto your present stands?

Bob

I did in fact talk to a few people about it ... no one is willing to cut an existing saddle and weld on new metal .... too dangerous ... also metal is already hardened in such a way that the welds would not be the best?? ( I am out of my element here in regards to welding )

I have seen the ones mentioned that are of the 2 ton nature.

These are the flattest ones I could find:

I have seen these .... My only worry is that the saddle is too small?

Have you used these?

Thanks!

Yes, those saddles do look small.

I don't have that pair, mine are very old; however, they are of the same pin type design. I don't trust the ratcheting type; they seem to be too sloppily made.

Most of the pin type stands cost quite a bit more, but at least I don't have to constantly worry about the car falling on me as I'm trying to concentrate on my work.

There are jack stands with pinch weld adaptors. Finding them is a problem.
