Just watch what you say. If Chechen are suffering from the war with the terrorists that means Russia is doing something wrong? Following this logic if the terrorist start fighting in any other part of Russia and the the civilians get killed it would mean Russia should just surrender and leave that region. Couldn't agree more. I think the extremists are working to get backlash against peaceful Muslims to start a Holy War. It may just work. Put yourself in the place of dead childrens' parents and then picture a Muslim community in the area. Are you gonna' sit on your hands and wait for your next child to be murdered???
I think this is just an ongoing WWIII event. And did you notice that there were some terrorists who survived-but sadely now are dead. I'm not sure their end was easy. Probably not worth even 100 Virgins.

I wasn't only speaking of this particular incident but also in regard to any possible future actions the Russian government may take as a result of this horrific tragedy.
As for the lack of prisoners in this case, the now deceased terrorists got off too easy in my opinion. They should have given every parent of those kids a Louisville Slugger and 5 minutes alone with each of those dirtbags.

There is more to this story than just the Islamist angle. Russia has done some very nasty things to Chechens in the past. The presense of Arabs among the hostage takers does point toward cooperation with Islamist elements though.
The quote from Putin you placed at the end of your post is true enough but Putin was openly blaming Russia's current troubles on the fall of the Soviet Union. A lot of people doubt Putin's commitment to democracy.
This is really a horrible act. I think it will certainly cause a devastating response. Can you imagine he anger this would cause in the US?
