Is using a fireplace beneficial in the winter?

Funny, there was a bloke once, and I've read some of his stuff.

Franklin (???)...had a high level of importance at some stage as a scientist and founder.

Had a lot to say about fireplaces, heat, heating, draft.

Loads of ways to get convective heat (even natural circulation, no blower) out of them. Air must be introduced from elsewhere, not drafts, as they suck cold air into a heated room.

I think there is still some debate on the importance of an outdoor air intake for a wood stove. They certainly are not in the building code and our installer didn't even mention putting one in.
We do have small amounts of air being pulled through window and door seals, and through the walls at switches and plug ins, but I think its a good thing as it promotes air exchange. We never feel a draft from any particular source so its not an issue.
Many houses are built very tight but with no air exchange system so indoor air quality is quite bad, but no one would ever crack a window if they are using oil or gas or electric heat... If the uncontrolled air exchanges in my house cost me a 1/3 of a cord of wood, or even 1/2 a cord, its not a big deal, it grows on trees and I've got a wood production surplus in my forest of around 25 cords a year...

I had an outdoor air intake with a sealed glass door on my fireplace in my last house I built. It worked well. The furnace shut off until about 4 hours after the last flame died out.

Never did patent the design so more people could benefit from it.

Q.

My Electric Bill was $99 last month. I only run the heat pump at night (set at 60) the rest of the time I use a propane cosmetic style gas logs. Costs me $180 to fill once a year. I'm sure I save more than that on the electric bill in December alone.

Plus if the power ever goes out I won't freeze to death.

Not all of those things are worthless.
