Is TV getting even worse?

We cut the cord about 3 or 4 years ago but still watch some TV via streaming and Netflix DVDs.

As long as it's new to me, it's new in my book and there is some very good programming out there. Off the top of my head, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Deadwood. In terms of mindless sitcoms, I'd put Community or Parks & Recreation up against Cheers (my all time favorite show).

Outside of the occasional football game or Presidential debate, I rarely watch anything OTA. I really can't stand commercials.

I was going to get rid of TV, just keep internet (got rid of phone a while ago when we got a VoIP box) but the cable compnay gave us a deal to keep it.
on network TV all I like is Person Of Interest on CBS, and Burn Notice and Covert Affairs on USA.
Holmes on Homes and Holmes Inspection I like also, and Rehab Addict on DIY; I like most shows on DIY actually.

and Phineas And Ferb on Disney is awesome

but yes, I think the quality is going down; too much violence, too much spiritism (ghosts, vampires, etc) and too much vulgarity.

and when I'm surfing, it seems all the commercials are on at them same time!

Storage wars is good turn off the brain TV, as is Pawn stars (helps that they are local). Top shot is good when it's on.

Some of the stuff on Science channel is good. Discovery put on the "Mermaids" thing and that pretty much ended their credibility.

Other than that, I don't watch much as it's just to depressingly bad.

+1

Guys , realy, call your cable provider this morning and order a DVR. If you are going to pay for cable anyway it is a necessity these days. The amount of commercials has made it impossible to enjoy live tv anymore.
I can see the day coming soon where there will be a portion of your screen with ads running constantly. How long can it take before they realize everyone is fast forwarding through the comercials?

I have a dish there is nothing to watch but fox news and the weekend car shows on speed and and spike. I bought a outdoor digital tv antenna and can pick up 40 channels there's live radar music video channels old school tv shows and it's free.

There's still some good stuff to watch on TV. I just think that with so many more channels being introduced, it just seems like there's way more garbage.

It's definitely getting harder (more time consuming) to sift through the bad to find the good.

While I will agree there are some good shows to be found among the hundreds of available channels, is it really worth the cost in dollars and time? Not for me.
Several on here have brought up shows that they think are pretty good....Breaking Bad being one of them. The writing and acting is somewhat good in that show, especially when compared to other current TV stuff. But why must it be so dark, negative, and somewhat disturbing? It seems to be a common theme in entertainment these days. Frankly, I don't really enjoy being 'disturbed' or shocked when I watch TV. I want to be entertained, but not to the point of being uncomfortable. It's even the same with these so called reality shows. Often times creepy people with bizarre facial hair, piercings, tattoos, hugely obese, or whatever. Sorry, but these types of folks don't really make me want to watch them or care about them. How many stupid pawn shows do they have on TV now? Too many. Besides that, all the pawn shops I've been in during my life are typically rather shady places with questionable staff. Why would I want to watch a show about them?
Anyway....just my opinion.

I watched 2 episodes of Breaking Bad last night. I thought it was pretty good. The dark side of it is to show what some people are capable of if they throw morals and ethics out the window and no longer have anything to live for. Granted, i don't think I could become the worlds best meth cook if I knew I'd be dead in a year, but I'd probably start trying things I'd have been afraid of previously!

I get that. I still don't know why the 'dark side' is so prevalent in much of today's entertainment. I mean....even if a person was going to die....is doing unethical and despicable behaviors something to be thought of as entertainment? No, I certainly would not want or expect every series on TV to be a Father knows Best type of thing, but at the same time so much of our weekly programming is filled with similar dark type stuff....or sexual garbage such as having affairs, infidelity, or what have you. For me, I need to stop putting all that junk into my head on a daily basis. It's tough enough dealing with real life and driving to work with scary nut-jobs on the road....not to mention the nasty folks in my workplace.

For all the reasons you state, I will always watch The Joy of Painting if PBS/Create continues airing the show.

They could nuke ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN and it would be for the bettter. Their news is slanted bogus, sitcoms are nothing but lame hollywood elite drive by [censored], most of which isnt funny and lousey reality shows.

Watch History, military, velocity and some NFL and local news.
