is this mix good for winter use?

2009 Chevrolet Silverado 4.8L V8 w/ 6 qt oil capacity; @ 9350 miles I went to Valvoline Instant Oil Change and had them fill with 5 qts of bulk Valvoline conventional 5w30 and had them add 1 qt of Super Tech (Walmart) full synthetic 5w30 and their brand of filter (doesn't appear to be a fram product); is this a good mix for winter use? is the Valvoline conventional a IIA base oil? is the Super Tech synthetic a III base oil? who actually produces the Super Tech synthetic oil? thanks

No bother adding 1q of "synth". Base oils and additives can be interchanged to get the same result. Better base, lesser additives required. Mixing the different additives is actually bound to reduce the overall effectiveness of the additives, as they are intended to be balanced in ratios. Same thing for oil additives, more of one thing can negatively affect another.

Just pick and oil and go with it. There are plenty of great deals on top-tier synths. Conventional oils don't need anything added to do their job, they are excellent. Valvoline, for instance, uses an additive w/sodium, same as GTX and Mobil Clean 5000 (a G-III solvent-dewaxed base oil)

I also avoid mixing oils as I believe they reduce the overall effectiveness of each oil. Stick with just one. Valvoline conventional is a good oil and doesn't need anything added to be good for winter use.
