Recently I restocked my filter stash:

I noticed that the new wix 51356 looked different inside.

The old ones had a spring near the adbv and a smooth bottom:

The new ones do not have a visible spring near the adbv and have a "bump" at the bottom
of the filter

is one design supior to the other or is it just cheaper to make?

first of all, nice stash... Second, thanks for using an actual camera to take the pics and not a potato.

Interesting to see the change, not to sure what to make of it.

I had heard Wix was moving some of their thread end bypass filters to dome bypass. You sir are holding the proof that is true.

I think the dome end is a little cheaper to make as it is the most prevalent design.

I wonder if they plan to do all or just some?

Ive checked all our wix stock a few months ago at the oreilly hub i work at and all the 51356 we have has been changed to newer design wasnt sure if it was a good or bad thing when i noticed that, even the 51334 has been changed

Yep ... went from base end bypass valve design to a dome end bypass valve.

I think it depends on the filter line. In comparisons between Wix filters with base-end bypass and other filters with dome-end, the filter media is shorter, sometimes considerably. Maybe the move to the dome-end bypass in some lines is to allow for more filter media?

It would be interesting to see if the filter media is taller in the new design compared to the old.

I've only seen two Napa Platinum filters out of the box, and both have dome-end bypass. They will be going on both my cars this spring.

It was only a matter of time before someone saw that! good job. I bought a case of those about 8 years ago for my fiero. Down to 4 now.

That certainly makes sense. A thread end bypass versus a dome end bypass in a Wix 51515 won't make a huge amount of media difference (percentage wise). That's certainly not the case in something like the 51356 or the 51365. A thread end bypass sacrifices a lot of media in such small filters.
