Is this a horrible idea?

Now, if its just a bad idea I'm going to give it a shot anyway :-) So, I'm about to do a LC flush on my engine ('99 Nissan Altima KA24DE), and my plan is to do a full oil change adding the 16oz (I think that's the proper flush amount) to a cheepo 10W-40 (manual calls for a 30wt, but I figure the LC will thin it a bit) Drive it for 100-200 miles, then do the "real" oil change. Just want to know if I'm doing anything that's likely to cause any major damage to anything.

Although I'm not familiar with LC, as far as the oil goes, it shouldn't really be an issue. Perhaps you'll end up with a 5w30 after adding 16 oz of LC? Going into New York spring weather, none of this should be of concern. If you're driving it for a period, make sure you don't overfill the sump, taking the added 16 oz into account. Follow whatever LC says about how long you can/should leave it in the engine.

Your 1999 manual calls for straight 30w?

Odis has been recomending a 10% dosage for years. That's the ratio I'm using in my vehicles.Odis would be more than happy to answer any questions you have.Call him @214/929-2704.
Tell him Mark from Bobistheoilguy sent you.

bdleonard, what your doing would be fine, just don't overfill.

Give Odis a call, he's great to talk to.

For a 5 quart sump, you have 1,600 ounces, so 10% is 16 oz.

In the test report paper we recommended 16oz. for a 4 to 5 quart sump, so 10 to 15% by volume for a Flush Routine is probably OK.

LC's viscosity is about SAE 25-32 weight, so 16 oz. won't thin the oil to any extent.

Well, anyone with a calculator would know that there is a typo above.

Just to clarify:

5 quarts = 160 ounces so 0.1 or 10% of that is 16 ounces.
