Would it be less confusing for people if there weren't so many different viscosity grades on the market ?

Which viscosities would you like to see discontinued ?

Merc I am inclined to agree but some thread topics lately are just getting blurred.

The oil companies are out to make money, so they will only produce weights that they they feel will bring in revenue. All we have to do is reference our owners manual and see what the manufacturer deems appropriate, then we can run down to WM (or whoever you choose to purchase your product from) and pick out the correct grade. There are a lot of viscosity grades available, and to the average consumer it may be confusing when they see the many shelves stocked full with a variety of various weights...but it doesn't have to be. Just reference the owners manual and use whatever it states.

You can't discontinue 10w30, since a good syn sae30 will be a 10w without vii.

So this is how this country ended up with so man dumbdonkey laws.

10W-30 and 20W-50 are great viscosities.. You guys are brainwashed by the CAFE standards and the propaganda that is posted by people who think they know.

Instead of having 50 pages on one topic, I like to see some new topics being started. I usually prefer to sit back and wait for other people to start topics, but lately there haven't been enough new topics.

What does 10w30 (or 10w-40) do that can't be done by a 0w-40 or 5w-40? It isn't like the Euro OEM's are using 10w30 for the 24hr races.....Other than being cheap to formulate, I really don't see the point of a 10w30

I doubt there's anything a PCMO 10w30 can do that an oil like GC 0w30 or Redline 5w30 couldn't do, and perhaps do better.

20w-50 has its place in race engines that are clearanced for it, though I imagine a 5w-50 or 15w-50 would work just as well. but then with cost as a factor, the 20w-50 can be changed more often.

10w-30 ILSAC varieties, 10w-40, and 20w-50, Merk.

Actually, as you might have seen me post before, at least some Canadian Tire stores have eliminated most 10w30 ILSAC synthetics, since they are essentially obsolete. And, they've stuck to that policy.

Those are the only grades I wish existed :^) Heck I'd use mono grades if they were more common, say via Walmart 5 quart jugs.

I have five vehicles at my house. Four of them spec 10w30/5w30. My old truck was getting loose bearings and ran well on 10w40. I don't have it anymore but it is still in service. Also, there are a lot of older cars restored and running that would need one of these heavier weights.

I'd say each manufacturer having their own unique set of standards (GM Dexos, Chrysler MS-6395, VW 507.00 etc) is far worse.

What would be less confusing is using the grade recommended in your owner's manual.

What's so confusing? There are only a couple listed in the vehicle's owner manual, just use what's recommended in there.

I've got a couple of 10W30s in my shed (A3/B4, surprise surprise). Agree that an ILSAC 10W30 makes no sense, I'm surprised how long ILSAC supported it.

Pretty well agree with the 10W40, it's my least favourite of any grade.

I reckon in Oz, getting rid of 20W50 wouldn't work...it's in too many manuals, and fairly recent ones.

I'd like to see the mineral 25W and 30-70s (and the 40-70s) gone, and those people that convince people that they need them.

Just for the sake of simplicity. I have nothing against xW-20s and xW-30s. Or even 0W-16!

I'd love to see Castrol 10W60 in Walmart 5 quart jugs.
