Is there a recommended oil for short tripping

This is totally just a personal preference and opinion, but I would run Valvoline Maxlife High Mileage Synthetic Blend for the extras in the add pack and because it is inexpensive and do 2000-3000 mile OCI's with a Champ XL or SuperTech filter. If at all possible, I would also make sure I took it out at highway speeds once a week for at least 20 minutes with some hard accelerations.

I’m not saying the owner’s manual recommendations are the best, but at the same time we really haven’t seen oil viscosity related failures (given that the OCI was reasonable) from following the manufacturers oil viscosity recommendations.

Again, no. You followed CAFE spec. not the manufacturers actual rest of the world recommendations.

I see no evidence that engines cannot reach 300k miles or more when the recommended oil is used. There are hundred millions of vehicles in the US and Canada that have just used the manufactures recommended viscosity oil (5w20, 0w20, 5w30 and etc) for hundreds of thousands of miles, and they are all still going down the road with no issues.

Hyundai engines aren't going to make it to 300,000 miles running 5w-20 on 7000 mile OCI.
Oil lab tests tell me that there is excessive fuel dilution in Hyundai gdi engines during the winter, with out regular extended highway drives. Fuel builds up in the oil and it's bad by 3,500 miles.
Even if it's summer all year, something in the engine btfo the oil and causing viscosity breakdown so even without fuel dilution it's running into viscosity breakdown around 6,000 miles.
