Is there a good/useful oil thickener?

I was thinking about trying 5w-20 in my truck just to see what would happen (lower mileage, less noise, etc), but if the thinner oil doesn't work, I don't want to just dump it out and waste it. I would like to just add something to make it thicker: Back to something near a 30 weight. I would like something that is actually a lube, and not just a thickener. I don't want to use Lucas. Maybe something from LubroMoly. It should also cost less than $6 since that is what an oil change would cost me.

Loobed why not just keep the 5W-20 for the full OCI? Most of the oils you have used of the 5w30 variety sheared into the 5W-20 range and your engine is just fine or better yet just keep using 5w30.

I have not tried it yet. It was just a thought in case I didn't like the 5w-20. I like to figure out all the possibilities before I do something so there isn't any last minute surprises. I may change my mind later and not even run the 5w-20.

Just fill it up so it's a 1/4 to 1/2 up the dipstick. If you want to go thicker for any reason, add 1/2 to 3/4 qt. 20w-50.

I vote for this suggestion.

If you're happy with the 5w-20 as-is, you can always top it up with more 5w-20 after the preview time.

That would probably work. I have a 6 quart sump, and it should run with only 5 quarts.

Back in the day, I use to put STP in very slowly, poured it out (like honey) slowly. Wonder if it is the same STP as yesteryear?

This is how I do when I changed oil 2 months ago in my E430 with 8.5 quarts sump, I used 5 quarts Mobil 1 0W20 with 2 quarts Mobil 1 0W40, so far it run very smooth, when I add 1-1.5 quarts in summer I may add 0W20 or 0W40 or half&half.

STP or motor honey will thicken things up. But don't get the STP 4 cyl version - it is thinner.
I don't even know if they make STP anymore.

I wouldn't try the thinner oil. I know, some do it and the results are OK, but consider this:
--Better gas mileage helps sell new vehicles
--Thinner oil helps lower gas mileage
--GM chose to stick with 5w30 for some reason, and I'll assume that it was engine life.
--You'll never save enough gas money using 5W-20 to pay for the smallest engine repair.

IMO....For a 2001 GMC truck, I would just buy a quart of Rotella Diesel Dino in 15w40 and add it to the sump. They sell quarts of the Diesel Dino at Walmart.

IMO....You could also splurge for a gallon of Delvac at Walmart, then mail in the $5 off rebate per gallon for about $8 for the gallon. Then on your next OCI, you could, blend up a mix of the remaining Mobil Delvac with some Mobil Super Synthetic for a fine synthetic blend.
