Is my TBN good or not after 6,000 miles?

I have a question for the experts. I change my oil and filter on my work dumptruck every 6,000 miles. The oil analysis sheets come back consistently with a TBN of 5.0 to 5.2. Is this good or bad for this few miles? The truck is a 1996 International with a DT 466 Navistar engine.

While I don't consider myself an expert, I would say that this oil has plenty of life left with a TBN of 5. If you're willing, (and everything else on the UOA looks good) stretch it out for another 2,000 miles on the next OCI and see if the TBN is still acceptable.

I would run the oil longer but, I work for Kansas Department of Transportation and they make us change oil and filter every 6,000 miles on the dumptrucks. Seems like a waste of tax payers money to me?

I drive a 2005 international the service on that is recomended at 20,000. You should go atleast 10,000, however if they tell you 6000 that may me there way of extreme preventive maintenece(Or whatever I have been drinkin.) I bet that is clean as $%^# compared to the inside of other trucks of that year, keep whoopin it up.

Depends on the Lab Used used to get the TBN. If this is done by Blackstone the TBN will be low compared to most others.

CAT says 5.0 TBN minimum on its Diesels. I believe this is using the in-house SOS analysis.

The consensus around here on a Blackstone Analysis seems to be 1.0 TBN for Gas and 2.0 TBN for Diesel.

The lab used is CTC in Kansas City, Kansas. I don't know how good this lab is? Prior to this lab we used CAT, which seemed to give a more extensive analysis. Don't even get a TBN on the reports for CTC labs.

First off what was your beginning TBN? What type of service does these trucks do? Another thing is time of year, winter is harder on TBN than summer. Lastly milage vs time is something else, most commercial trucks do a lot of idling especially dump trucks since the truck has to running to use the dump.

I would say depending on the other factors of the analysis you might be able to extend out the drains, but no on TBN alone.

If you are interested I can get you a pretty comprehensive analysis package for less than $20 which also includes shipping. I can email you a sample of my reports, let me know.
