Is LIQUI MOLY overkill for an E36 "M3"?

Others will chime in, likely @edyvw, but if you do some research on here, you will find that Liqui-Moly is just an average oil with great marketing. Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Castrol, etc., that you buy in Walmart are more affordable and typically a better overall oil based on UOA/VOA's we see. I would run any BMW LL-01 approved oil and not think twice about it.

P.S. I've owned 5 E36's, one being a Z3 M Coupe!
That's part wives tale from some people being sour over the Liqui Moly cost. Liechtlauf is a **** good oil with the specs:

  • ACEA A3/B4
  • API SP
  • BMW Longlife-01
  • MB-Freigabe 229.5
  • Peugeot Citroen (PSA) B71 2296
  • Porsche A40
  • Renault RN 0700/RN 0710
  • VW 502 00/505 00
People scoff at it because of their marketing and pricing. I do FCPEuro and pay $18 per oil change which is 7 quarts, oil filter, engine air filter, and cabin air filter. Lets see any of those other brands you mentioned from walmart do that.

how come nobody else thought on that?
souds like a mannol description ?
Caught what? LM description of their products? They have been "selling bridge" to the people since 1997 when Hydrocracked oils made their way into synthetic PCMO.
You guys have not witnessed their marketing campaign in the 90s in Europe: HC this, HC that. Why? Bcs. 99.9999% of people don't know anything about it.
The company I worked for tested all regular suspects and then LM bcs. LM was just in your face everywhere. Castrol Edge 5W30 Euro or 5W40 Euro is what is in LM quality category. I am not sure how Castrol names those oils now in Europe.

To be fair, if FCP didn't have LM would you still buy it retail or use whatever FCP was selling to take advantage of the program?

I’d still take the FCPeuro program oils but that’s the point. Take money out of the equation and LM has some very good products. Leightlauf has many approvals. Molygen doesn’t but it’s nice and robust.

Out of curiosity, wanted to see what the best deal at Walmart is for a LL-01 oil right now, Quaker State 5w40 Euro (same or very similar to Pennzoil Platinum 5w40 Euro) is $23 for 5 quarts, hard to beat that: Quaker State Euro Full Synthetic 5W-40

Alternatively, Liqui Moly is near double that price at Walmart.
Their is no reason to pay full price for LM when FCP exists if you are in the long game.

Most people don't want to bother shipping used oil, so in that case, the price for LM is still about the same at FCP as it is on Walmart. By buying a quality oil for half the price, there is no need to then go through the process of shipping used oil back to FCP.

Don't you know @TiGeo owns controlling interest in FCP?

Haha, I mean I like FCP Euro as well, but not enough to deal with shipping 7 quarts of oil back to them.
You have to look at the bundle...oil add in wipers plus filters etc...why not for '00s in store credit for an hour of packing/shipping/paperwork filling out?

But again, if you're going LM and you're looking at value then why wouldn't you use FCP euro? You keep doing apples to oranges. I can do 7 quarts LM, Oil filter, air filter, and cabin air filter for $18. You're talking QS Euro for $23 for 5qts only (and I like QS euro) but if anyone is going to mention the money aspect then make it about the money. If you're going to say an oil is inferior then stick to that. Don't say an oil is inferior due to the money. You're crossing two topics and there's a know remedy to that.

I already haul my own oil to Autozone for disposal. What's the difference between there and shoving it in whatever box was shipped to me and printing a label? I've been changing it in my 2014 2500HD 3/4 6.0l, Ineos Grenadier, Yamaha 225SHO, and JD Gator 825i. To say it's paid for itself is an understatement.
