Is it possible to get manual rental cars?

I need to really brush up on my manual driving skill, especially with the arrival of 6-speed transmission. I figure it would be great to get a rental vehicle to do that.

Why not call them and ask?

I think this was one of the reasons why rental companies stopped renting sticks - people were renting them to learn how to drive and thrashing them in the process.

For someone wanting to learn, the only option may be to buy an old beater off Craigslist for a couple of hundred bucks.

Not sure what to tell ya...

Most European rentals are stick.
Only ever had one in North America, and that was a small Mitsubishi the had a 4 speed with a duel range sport and economy (two gear levers)
But that was back in the 80's.

Good call.

The only manual rentals I'm aware of are exotics, and even the cheapest exotic rental costs about the same as it would to buy a Craigslist beater straight-up.

Last major company I knew about that had stick shift rentals was in the early 2000s - one of the big ones had 5-speed Dodge Neons.

People were abusive with these cars, like they can be with rental Mustangs.

i worked for enterprise rent a car in 2007, for only 4 mo. it is a good co to work for. i was a driver. but i never saw any stick shifts. it is a family owned co, so you cant buy stock in the co. i would buy stock if i could.

Take driving lessons with an instructor with a manual transmission car. 2-3 hours with a pro and you'll get it.

There was a story in the U.K. some years ago, A woman rented a stick shift and drove several hundred miles, pedal to the metal, in second gear!! trying to keep up with the traffic.
She had never driven anything other than an automatic.

I have always heard that in rental and fleet situations, automatic transmissions last longer. No clutch to burn up the linings on I guess.

But I agree with the post that driving one is just like riding a bicycle in that you never forget how. Just a few starts and stops to learn the clutch action and you're all good to go.

On another note, I got on a bicycle this past week for the first time in 30 years.....nothing to it.

I was going to mention this as well. I saw an ACR Neon (or something similar) with a 5 speed at a Thrifty in the late 90's at BWI. It was a car available for rental, not one of the employee cars. It had the bar codes in the window and on the lot prepped for rental.

Other than that, I've not seen a manual transmission car for rent in the US.

It was probably meant for vacationing foreigners who do not know how to drive slush.

You laugh about that, but if I don't periodically drive one of the automatic cars in my home, I'm more at risk of throwing someone through the windshield going for the clutch and catching the larger brake pedal with my left foot.

My wife isn't going to let my drive her car if I keep doing that after driving the P5.

I know EXACTLY what you mean...I did this a lot on our Rabbit.

I think I caused a couple of brain aneurysms' to the drivers behind me.
