I'm unable to figure this one out. I ordered something from Massachussetts. I'm in San Francisco. Look at the tracking and the progress bar:

Yes, it seems to be moving East first, before traveling West to SF!
Items go to sort facilities first. So an item might have to go north first before it goes back south towards you. It doesn't go in a straight line from point A to point B. Not sure what the point of this thread is?
It's them-package was never in Vegas, whoever created the label was there. I have weird things happen with USPS as well, sometimes West Coast packages get here in 2 days, but things mailed from 200 miles away take over a week.
The sled was too heavy so the dogs needed additional rest.

The first entry only means that someone created the label and they're located in NV - most likely it's the location that pays the bill for shipping. The warehouse where your package actually started from is in MA, and it's on its way to you.

How does that work? If I create an online shipping label, I don't see an option for putting in an origin of shipping other than my location. If I create a shipping label here for shipping from SF to NYC, I will have to ship from SF to NYC, I can't ship from Reno to NYC.

If the default ship from address on the account is setup as Las Vegas, anytime someone logs into the account and generates a new label and doesn't take the time to update that address, USPS is going to assume it's shipping from that address as that is the only information the Post Office has at the time the tracking number is generated.
Once the package is picked up or dropped off at the Post Office and the label is scanned, tracking updates since that it the first time the Post Office learns the package isn't actually in Las Vegas. The customer's account will be billed accordingly.
