Is it common for new brake rotors to warp?

My friend who teaches auto repair at BOCES (high school) put on a cheap rotor and an expensive rotor on someone's car, after a year of use, both looked the same. His conclusion, use good pads and cheap rotors.

I had the opposite reaction once.

I had to replace 2 rear rotors on a Ford Crown Vic. Because the auto parts store had only 1 ultra cheap rotor, the car also recieved a premium rotor on the other side.

I installed the brakes and torqued the wheels to 100 ft/lb

One week later the car came in for pedal pulsation. I had to re-machine the cheap rotor, but the premium one was fine.

Anyway, you should have seen how cheaply made that one disc was. It looked like a sand castle.
