Ive have always run havoline in my cars and trucks, and I change my own oil every 3k. My mechanic and his son always give me a bunch of [censored] for using it, even though I have never had any engine problems. They say the best dino oils are pennzoil or valvoline(But I am planning on switching to maxlife in my wifes car on the next oil change due to the high miles and all the good things Ive read about it).So long story short, are they just giving me a hard time or is there any truth in what there saying?

Oils are all pretty equal, I have seen (don't ask me to reference this) mention that it doesn't quite wear as well as Pennzoil, but the new DS seems to hold its viscosity grade better. Starts out thinner, ends a little thicker than Pennzoil in a 5w30.

Really, if you change your oil regularly (within manufacturer specs), use any decent oil (I would say Havoline is better than decent) and decent filters the rest of the vehicle is always going to fall apart before the engine unless something disasterous happens.

His mechanic is an idiot because he believes Pennzoil and Valvoline are the best conventional oils? A lot of people on here believe the same thing, are they also idiots? That seems a little rough...

I've always liked Valvoline. But my mind is open to various other oil brand options.
If its researched well and has a good reputation, I'll try it.
I am going to try the Motorcraft brand for my next change.
Its very affordable and gets very good UOA's and reviews here.

I've used it twice in my car so far and it seems great. UOA came back great with 4,300 miles on it. Still had plenty of TBN left. Didn't burn a drop either. Plus I got it for only 70 cents a quart

You make quick assumptions.
Because he gave him heck for using havoline is the ultimate reason.

So he's an idiot for having an opinion on Havoline?

Before DS, Havoline used to be the big "sleeper" oil on here. It turned great UOA's, had lots of moly, and was cheap. Now that it costs 60 cents more a quart, a lot of folks pass it up for the less expensive conventional oils.

I am a fan of Havoline. Not only have I used it for years and years, but I think it is as good as any conventional oil out there. I also like the more shear stable viscosity index improvers, so that the formula start out thinner. My only gripe with Havoline, is that anything besides the basic formula is pretty much impossible to find.

I'm not going to argue.
My last words are i'll bet that his opinion was based on false claims (eg:pennzoil causes wax) in this case maybe a car he drove had bearing failure and he happen to be using havoline.

The big joke here used to be that chevron/havoline had better wear rates than Mobil 1.

I use it a lot and use Chevron Supreme specificly for break-in for the moly.

I scored a lot of 5w-20 DS, a great winter oil. I also have a few quarts of Havoline Synth 10w30 that I don't know what to do with. Probally I will juice the 5w-20 DS with a quart of the synth. meh.

while I wouldnt go that far, I will say that I do know some wrench types that are set in their ways and will not agree that times have changed as well as motors, oils etc...

Ah who am I kidding, your right, he is an idiot!!!

if you want to send me some of the oil, preferably the free stuff, i will 'test' it out for you for the next oh, 20-30K miles and get back with you on wether you should consider running it or send me the rest for a further test!

havoline is good stuff. my family has been using it for the past 3 generations.. no kidding. not one of them had oil related issues.

So the guy is an idiot because his opinion differs from some of the amateur tribologists here? Ignorant maybe, but an idiot? Wow, tough crowd...
