hi everyone just wondering if formula shell is decent oil for a 3500 mile 4 month changes i get this oil for buck a quart i use it in a 3.1 v6 grand am with oversized purolater filter is this good combo

It is probably fine for what you are using it for. Nothing special, nothing awful.

I would start looking for the new GF-4 designated reformulation as the new stuff will probably be a little better.

Formula Shell is part of the Pennzoil/Quaker State family of brands by SOPUS - Shell Oil Products, Houston. Based on the product data sheets, it looks to be a very close cousin to Pennzoil.

The base oils are supplied thru the Motiva Port Arthur, Texas, lube plant, and are GRP II and Grp II+ base oils. Motiva also has Grp III capabilities which could be showing up in GF-4 formulations.

Indications are that Pennzoil switched to the GF-4 formulations this past summer. Bottles of Formula Shell, sitting on the shelf now, could very well be GF-4 with the older GF-3 labels.

...A very good bargain at $0.99 a quart!

We get a coupon in our Sunday paper from Pep Boys for Shell formula oil, so with the rebate its $.59 a quart. I have 7 cases downstairs and will pick up another case this week. I have good luck with the rebate program with Pep Boys and there's a site where you can track your rebate. You can never have enough $.59 oil. Who ever would have thought motor oil be cheaper than bottled water!

I am using the stuff in the white bottles right now during my second Auto-RX cleaning. Seems to be working very well. Car is running very smooth. I did notice the SOPUS connection when I purchased some Quaker State oil at Auto Zone.
