I was in Chicago recently and Diesel was much cheaper than most 87 octane. In Kentucky about a week ago and it was about the same price as 87 octane. Minneapolis, about between mid grade and premium. Out here in the West, Diesel is way more expensive than 92 octane. Seattle, up to 45 cents more expensive per gallon. Central Oregon, 30 cents more expensive than 87. Central Valley Cali about 25 cents more expensive. Whats it like in your area? And why the huge swings in price difference?

It's getting close but not quite. I think regular unleaded is 10 cents cheaper. I don't buy gasoline but about once a month so I don't pay much attention.

One to twelve cents, depending on where you buy. First time in a long time it is actually cheaper in the KC area, either side of the state line.

Diesel is much cheaper than petrol in New Zealand - but we don't pay road tax at the pump for diesel, that is paid separately by what we call Road User Charge. This is variable depending on vehicle size (cars pay less and trucks more obviously)and also the more you buy,the cheaper the cost. You pay per Km...in advance.Of course anything not running on the road just buys from the pump, and so there is no need to claim back road tax.

Even with the RUC added on,diesel is still cheaper than petrol.Costing out on my commute,my 2.5 litre diesel Pajero was cheaper to run than my 1600cc Nissan NX Coupe.

This is a recent development. For a long time, diesel was higher than gas in Illinois.

In my part of northern NJ, the rural picturesque section

, diesel is more than 87 about the same as 89 and less than 93. Of course it varies per station and brand but over all the above holds true. Not too long ago it was always more than 93.

Whimsey

The demand for diesel in So Cal is very low therefore the price is about 40-45 cents more than premium. Costco and Sams Club gas stations do not have diesel and many other gas stations do have it either. Low demand and high maintenance cost = high price.

For the Minneapolis Market, diesel is usually priced around premium gasoline pricing with some available for about mid grade gasoline pricing if you know where to look in the non-winter months. During the winter, plan on it being priced above premium due to the weatherizing of the fuel to prevent cold weather problems like gelling. Typically means a blend of No.1 and No.2 and instead of straight No. 2. Also means even worse fuel mileage due to lower energy content in the No. 1.

I think diesel is 0.10 higher here than premium IIRC and it seems every second pickup on the road is diesel so im not sure where the supply vs demand pricing comes from in fact at a local Hess on sr54 there's only two diesel pumps and about 15 gas pumps so there's (almost)always a line formed.

In January, California 1.20 billion gallons of gasoline and 191 million gallons of diesel.

Arizona's January diesel consumption was 62 million gallons.

Neighboring Arizona's price is 46 cents per gallon lower than California.
When you drive East on the I-40 from CA to AZ there's an area within 50 miles of the border where there are no gas stations at all on the CA side. Within a few miles of entering AZ there's a gas station. Not just a gas station but a *large* one with lots of pumps.
The only CA station I saw was close to an agricultural inspection point (on another highway). Maybe those guys are forced to purchase on the CA side.

Diesel Audi and VW sales in the Pac NW have slowed. The big cost penalty for diesel fuel makes it tough to pay for the added cost of the TDI option. But even with Diesel at 4.50 and 87 octane at 4.00, there is still a pay off. Not much of a pay off. Something like if you drive 15K miles a year you will save about 20 bucks a month with a diesel versus gas VW / Audi.

Until about 10 days ago, diesel was on-track to be cheaper than RUG on a national average. But gasoline prices really started to drop quickly, much faster than diesel, so the spread has widened by nearly a dime a gallon this week.

Diesel is roughly 8 cents per liter cheaper than gasoline in the Toronto area right now. (according to torontogasprices.com the lowest diesel price today is 115.9 cents per liter while the lowest 87 octane gas price is 123.4 cents per liter)
