Is " clean " oil a good thing ?

i think all of the reasons talked about can cause oil to darken. my oil comes out fairly clean(IMHO due to the oil i use and my conservative OCI nature). the new clean oil stays clean for a long time FWIW!

I've not heard about "older" versus "newer" ZDDP... The molecule should be the same... Older vehicle engine oils... like from the 1950s and 1960s had much more ZDDP in them than newer oils...

I think a tribiologist who formulates oil for a living might know more about it than you. Its new to me too, but I take his word for it.

The way I read it, he meant ZDDP that's been in the engine longer, not ZDDP formulated in years gone by. Right, Dr_No?

I generally use Valvoline Durablend in my 4.7L Dakota, and it darkens slowly over the course of its life--nothing I considered abnormal. Last oil change I put in M1 5W-30. The oil turned very dark by about 1000 miles. I guess my engine was dirty or its just the nature of this M1.

I think I'd be more concerned with an oil that stayed clean after 5,000 miles than an oil that got dark. Dark oil means it's suspending all the byproducts and nasty stuff you don't want stuck inside your engine.

5K miles into my OCI the Pennzoil Platinum is still just a nice golden brown color on the dipstick of my 06 Mustang GT. It's been that way with every oil I've tried, M1, Amsoil, PP, and MC. It just does not seem to darken the oil much, and the engine has 57K miles on it, so it isn't brand new either. It must just be a very clean running engine??

A new oil to me that I consider a very good performer looks ugly right out of the bottle, BioSyn by RLI.

A used car lot down the street puts ND oil in their cars for sale because when you pull out the dipstick it looks pure and clean.

We put an add pack with a lot of Boron in the oil for one application we are testing and it takes clean pure looking oil and makes is look like liquid sludge.

Appearance can fool you.
