No, if it meets a 228.5 spec, then it is not "only" CF rated. It is also 228.5 rated!

My point is that an API rating of only CF, as opposed to CI4+ is irrelevant to a MB user if the oil is 228.3/5 or 229.3/5 rated, and that is what MB recommends for his engine. Are you agreeing with this now?

His engine is so old a recent API oil would be overkill but just fine. CI-4, CI-4+, CJ-4. One that old does not NEED an MB oil, just like older TDIs don't NEED VW oils.

It is interesting to note that Mobil ONLY recommends that I use Mobil 1 0W-40 which is "only" CF rated but also Mercedes MB 229.5 rated.

Quote:

- Mercedes MB 229.5
- Porsche Approval List 2002
- GM-LL-A-025 (gasoline)
- ACEA A3, B3/B4
- BMW Longlife 01
- VW 502.00/505.00/503.01
- GM-LL-B-025 (diesel)
- API SM/CF

They also told me that Mobil 1 15w50 would be a good choice for my old engine.

Quote:

- API SM/SL
- Requirements for Diesel Powered Vehicles where an API CF or API CD is recommended
- Provides extra anti-wear additive for older vehicles

What I find really interesting is that when I use the Mobil 1 Engine Oil Selector Tool on their website, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 does not even come up as an option for my application.

They don't seem to think anything more than an API CD/CF is needed for my Benz either.

My point, and the point that has been undeniable since the beginning of this thread, is that an API CD or CF rating is IRRELEVANT.

If you want the right oil for your engine, whether it's a Mercedes diesel or a Honda lawnmower, then use an oil meeting an appropriate modern specification.

But if you have a Mercedes diesel, or a Cummins diesel, or a Volkswagen diesel -- no matter whether it's a 2009 model or a 1989 model -- then use an oil designed for a modern diesel engine. Do not buy a gas-engine oil that just happens to carry an obsolete diesel spec.

The OP asked, "can I use Mobil Clean High Mileage 10W40?" in a MB turbodiesel. The answer is, [censored] no! that is a terrible choice and it doesn't matter whether it meets some obsolete spec that nearly every other oil in the world could meet if the manufacturer wanted to bother making the claim.

NO real difference between a 10w40 and a 15w40 above 5 degrees F. I would stick with the 15w40 if you are staying above that.

All 15w40 engine oils are diesel-rated.

Most 10w40 engine oils are not diesel-rated.
