is an engine flush needed?

when moving from semi to full synthetic, engine has 54K miles on it - is a flush needed to remove old deposits, if any? (will be using royal purple 10W-40)

why are you using this thick oil? is the most important question:
the most important problem with oil is that it is TOO THICK. Even Dr. Haas will not use a 10w40 in his racing Ferrari: and he lives in hot Florida.

you definitely do not need to flush, but if you want your engine to be happy, then use a synthetic 5w30, it will thank you many times over:

and if you want to make your engine think it's in piston and ring heaven, then use a 0w30 synthetic.
remember, the thicker the oil, the higher the viscosity, and the lower the flow. low flow = bad.
and Dr. Haas says : DO NOT ADD ANYTHING TO YOUR MOTOR OIL.

When I did mine I just changed over to synthetic and allowed it to slowly clean it out.
