I never thought about mixing grease until I came here. My question is. I have been using mobil 1 red synthetic grease for some time and just picked up a tube of valvoline all purpose chassis grease.

Will it mix with the Mobil 1 red synthetic with no problems and will it mix with Lithium grease that a had I my u-joints? I used the lithium in the u-joints the last time becaue i ran out of grease so I used the red multi purpose in the u-joints today.

I've got Mobil 1 in the front end and am just wondering if it will be OK to use the valvoline the next time I grease the front end.

Is red grease basically all the same?

I've never given grease a second thought until now.

Thanks, Johhny. The Valvoline I bought IS a lithium. I just checked. I guess I'll be paying more attention in the future. What would you, or anyone else that reads this post say is the best Lithium based #2 grease on the market?

Ditto to what Johnny said, grease color means nothing. Most off-the-shelf greases are all #2 lithium complex anyway and they can be mixed with reckless abandon. This certainly does not mean they are the 'best' for all applications but typically they are 'pretty good' for general purpose grease.

If you have some mystery grease and want to see if it is miscible with another grease, get some small plastic cups and mix a few squirts of both greases together. If they are incompatible, the oil will drop out of suspension and get runny. I've done this in the shop when we had a few tubes of mystery grease, using them with no ill effects in the machinery after checking if they would cause drop-out.

Well like oil's there is no best,it depends on application,,,,for me i don't mess with lithium it doesn't survive in my work world,Alum or Calcium complex is what i use fortified with 5% Moly.

what is your applications??????

nice chart J thanks for posting.

I use it to grease the front end, u-joints and front wheel bearings on a '73 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. It sees a fair amount of snow and slushy roads in the winter time. A lot of fairly high speed (80-90mph) driving for long distances in the summer time.

Thanks, Daman. I realize I'm not dealing with anything special but thought I would ask. Lithium it will be.
