Is a dealer prep fee usual?

The most they normally do is just slap a different name on the product. That's why you hear of getting no name brand TVs from a factory that spits out the name brand tvs but after they fulfill their name brand contract, they slap a different name on the no name ones that come off the same production line. Basically it costs more to make changes to a production line, now you're sourcing different types of materials. Lots of evidence for this. No evidence for your batch production theory. Just an excuse to justify a higher price.
That's kind of a bad example because they're always cheapening the electronics in... electronics. Take apart an early production run of something then the same one a year later. Motherboard will more than likely be simpler looking.

TVs can have more or fewer inputs, better speakers/ amps in the same chassis/ screen or even hobbled firmware for market positioning.

Those are great little tillers. More of a cultivator really. Mine bounces around like a rubber ball on new ground. My Home Depot has 1 for $369.00 usd.

Yeah but even if they cheapen it, it's the same production line. Also with electronic chips, it's expensive just to come up with an electronic chip so once it's made, they're not redoing them.
