Is 220 too hot?

The car is a 2.0 litre VW Beetle. I just installed some aftermarket gauges. Today on the highway doing about 130km/h (ok sometimes I got close to 140) the temp gauge was just under 220f. My sensor is mounted in the oil filter flange before the VW oil to coolant cooler, so this is the temp of the oil as it leaves the motor, not the sump temp. Is this too hot? I'm running Esso XD-3 0W30 this OCI. Note that at normal highway speeds the temp gauge was just over 210f and in the city I'd say just over 200f.

Sounds fine to me. 220F is just about 104 C. I don't worry until I hit around 250 F, which you probably won't ever reach at highway-legal speeds.

Don't worry; thats why you have the oil/coolant exchanger.

My 3.1L GM V6 runs 210-220degF coolant temperatures in the mid 20s in minor traffic. 220degF is no big deal.

I hit 118C (245F) going ~140kph constant for 3 hours with RP5w20 on my 2.2L camry. UOA showed everything was fine.

this oil temperature is not excessive for this engine

Some years ago I had the same engine in another vehicle. It had the same oil/coolant intercooler but a smaller frontal area with various factory spoilers. It had a digital oil temperature gauge (computer packaged)fitted as standard and a "caution" was issued at 120C (250f) when using a mineral oil

The highest it ever got was 120C and it normally ran around 100-105C as I recall. It was operated in an ambient range from -12C to 50C

I used a VW Approved synthetic 0w30 lubricant at the time. If I still had the vehicle I would be using a 5w-40 synthetic HDEO now
