Investing Strategies. What is your move?

Are you serious about having a mattress of cash ?

I didn't say I stuffed my mattress.... I said I got my money out of big banks.

Yes, I have a huge chuck of cash in my safe, but I have 80% of it in local banks and credit unions.

Have a big chunk of silver and gold as well.

Are you really sure that's safe? One wildfire could wipe that out.

Since the original investor thread got 🔒ed , let’s try the second edition.

2022. Inflation. Rising taxes. The shifting into a new economy. How are you adapting your investments and portfolios?
Why would a topic like investing be locked? I wish I had a good investment strategy right now I’m just collecting and reinvesting dividends

It just got too long, nothing really wrong with it.

You don't really need a good investment strategy. The basic one is to toss it all in an index fund like the S&P 500. I think if you did 100% S&P 500 like FXAIX, you'd be fine. Most people screw up by either not staying for the long haul or try something exotic to beat the market. The market goes up over the long term so you don't really have to try and beat it, just ride the wave and go up with it. You can try different mutual funds and try a more complex strategy, but the basic one will work well for pretty much everyone.

ETFs have their advantages and so do mutual funds. For the long term buy and hold strategy, mutual funds tend to have lower expense ratios than ETFs as they have a lot more in assets.

The best strategy in my opinion is to establish a dollar cost averaging discipline into a broad market mutual fund or ETF. During tough times when the markets and fund share prices drop you are buying more shares with that money.

Go over your budget to see where you can park back on or eliminate expenses. That money in turn would be added to your monthly contribution. Save $50? Increase your contribution by the same amount.

Check your withholding if you get big refunds back every year. As a example, if you get $2000 back as a refund that is $76.xx a paycheck that could be going into the funds. Try to break even on your Federal income taxes.

Discipline and Time are huge factors in any investing strategy.

How about we challenge young members here to contribute to their company sponsored retirement and/or an IRA?

Investing isn't complicated anymore with the great tools at companies like Vanguard or Fidelity. How do you choose from the thousands of investment options? You don't have to, just put you money in Fidelity's ZERO cost total market index fund - FZROX and check on the value in 40 years. Force yourself to put some money into your account every month by clicking a button. That's it folks, it's not hard. You will retire in comfort.

I would be glad to help anyone who is interested.

Takers?

Here is a interesting read. In case you haven’t heard of Charlie Munger, many will say he is the investing brain behind Warren the Buffet. When Charlie talks, people stop to listen.
Charlie is actually great at the annual meeting, usually very short comments and directly to the point. Hard to believe the guy is 98 and still pretty sharp.

Oh yeah, that's been handy to have in the US, since like never.

Is that correct? In Canada ETFs have tiny MERs (like 0.09%) compared to mutual funds which are more like 1.5% and even higher.
The Fidelity 500 Index fund has an expense ratio of 0.015%. Even the Vanguard index 500 fund has a higher expense ratio at 0.04%. But if you look at the expense ratios of the index 500 funds for ETFs, they're higher. Probably because the total assets in the funds are much lower than in Fidelity or Vanguard.

Depends on one’s investment needs and strategy. ETFs work pretty good I made money with them it’s like being in a mutual fund but you can trade like individual stock.
