Hi,

I know there are a lot of more important things to worry about than investing when a hurricane is threatening so many people... but I would like others' opinions about investing here.

TO be completely honest, I just about have pulled most money out of stocks, and have it sitting in government bonds for the moment. all I have to do is complete the transfer (maybe its too late, but this thing could wrek havoc on markets, etc for weeks, IMO) My thinking is that its good to get out while I still can, let energy prices do their thing and likely wreck markets, then buy back in at lower prices (Im not payng commissions).

I anticipate at least a drop for a couple days... today might be the worst, or tomorrow might be even worse as the full damage is seen and the extent is determined. Then again, things could rocket up if damage is less severe than anticipated, but I dont think its likely.

Am I doing too little too late, trying to swap out and wait for lower markets to buy back in? Or do you think things will depress for the next few days, creating a good buying point, thus making a swap out of stocks then back in a good idea?

Thanks,

JMH

Insurance companies will be or already have been liquidating to pay claims. They invest in broad markets so a couple standard index funds might be a good place for a cash infusion.

I guess I need to clarify... this is money that is in my TSP account... so the options are SP index, small cap index, int'l, gov't bond fund and commercial bond fund.

seeking stability from down markets, Im moving to gov't securities... for a few days at least.

I dont usually change TSP funds, exept for rebalancing, but with all the doom and gloom, I figured Id swap.

For my personal individual stock holdings, I think Im set to be OK through all of this... but the markets as wholes... IMO arent going to be very happy.

LOL, 10:17 EST update... markets are up 0.2-0.3%... maybe because there hasnt been much damage to oil facilities????

Maybe I need not move my funds... but maybe its still smart to preserve, just in case, so I'm ready to go all-in if this is bad and we tumble 5-10% this week on the major indices, with high oil and low markets.

If you don't move your TSP funds before 1100, they won't be in affect until the next day. If your in the C fund, your going to take a hit this month. But last month, you gained quite nicely. Spread the wealth....I got mine all across the gamut except for the F fund, which is usually bonds. What I've learned from watching is that if S&P, the C fund, is doing OK, F fund will not and vice versa. The I fund isn't too bad. G fund stays pretty much the same. S fund has been hanging in there too. I look at it like this, if China keeps growing like wildfire, you can't go wrong in the I funds.

yep, Ive done really well with the S and I funds. C is OK, but nowhere near the winner that the S and I funds have been.

I usually have mine across all just like you (none in the F fund), but Im thinking that especially given the doom and gloom of the hurricane and oil prices, that I can buy in cheaper at a later time...

Seems like I'm on the right track: out of C, most in G and I for now... buy back C and S when theyre cheaper...

Thanks!
