ATT "4G" on a Blackberry

I was surprised to see this - when I watch the process of data on the blackberry software, it generally is slow and comes through 3-5KB/refresh, with the refreshes roughly a second or two.

I was figuring more like 118k connection...

Blackberry is not always a good test since there's a lot of stuff happening with the BES. Also, AT&T's 4G definition includes HSPA, which can be up to 42Mbps, but rarely is. Verizon calls LTE "4G", but nothing else, for example. There are other factors too -- you can technically be on a 4G network but have a very poor connection (like -100dBM or worse) hence the low speeds.

Motorola Droid RAZR
Jelly Bean 4.1.2
stock Verizon tethering app
LTE @ -70dBm

Meatpacking District of Manhattan, New York, NY (indoors)

I haven't tethered my phone yet, but I just discovered an app by CWM that should work well.

My phone is showing a speed test of:

Verizon LTE in Baltimore (indoors right now)
9ms ping
17.9 Mbps Download
20.6 Mbps Upload

I assume I'll be close on the computer when tethered.

This cellular speed makes me want to upgrade my FiOS but my wife won't let me.

I know, right? Usually my phone clocks higher down/up speeds than my Comcast 25Mbps connection at home...

I have the 30 down/20 up connection and home and I get right at that and sometimes faster on the upload.

but 50/25 is just one click by one of my 22 month old daughters away from being at my modem lol

Once Sprint kicks up to LTE and you have a phone to accommodate it, you should be similar.

Those test dont mean anything , they are desired to fool you.

When you actually trying to browse the internet or download , they will throttle your speed automaticly as soon as you download for long period of time.

iphone 4s

I have seen actual download speeds from 250kbps to about 500kpbs avg probably around 300kbps

up speed 35kbps to 130kbps. avg around 50kbps

No they don't.

Of course they are.

I've never thought it was right to charge a surcharge for data you are already paying for. With tethering you are just using it a different way. I have a 2GB allowance. You can't regularly tether with only 2GB.

Unless you're on share everything plan with Verizon, in which case tethering is included.

It would be cheaper if I didnt have a basic phone on the plan. With the share plan the basic goes from $10 a month to $35. Ill be looking into it again when I drop the basic phone in 9 months and get one of those Google Voice VoIP devices.

Or have a grandfathered unlimited data plan on Verizon. :-)

My understanding is that will go going away for any contract renewal soon.
