Ran across this short video tonight. The town of baker is about 100 miles north of me and also about 1/2 between where I live and Las Vegas,NV.

It shows just how desolate this desert is in places.

Notice that he mentions electric cars as many misjudge the amount battery they need to get to a working charger.

We definitely get spoiled with modern cars and tech. The Fire Dept. at Ft. Irwin assists all the way to the Nevada border as well. They have to deal with plane crashes out in that desert too. At least stop and get a couple gallons of water before you leave Barstow and head out to the open desert.

Yeah, been there. Didn't see the Eiffel Tower though...

Driest, hottest, dustiest place i've ever been.

San Bernardino County is the largest in the US. And one with a very low overall population density. It has the same environment as Death Valley, which it encompasses a small part of.

Excellent video @Chris142. Thanks for posting. Sue and I pass through there on occasion, as well as the greater Death Valley area. We're always semi-prepared (2 or 3 bottles of water) but will up our preparation a bit more after seeing this.

Also too, San Bernardino County is indeed huge as @dnewton3 said. SB County also gets a bad rap - and in ways rightfully so - but large areas of north eastern SB county are breathtakingly gorgeous - and extremely remote.

Pictures are from 2023 when Sue and I were on a mini-road trip. The vastness of SB County is mind-blowing.

Baker is also home to the "world's largest thermometer". The angle here does not do it justice.... It's really tall!

I was disappointed the gift shop had closed for the day. I wanted to buy a miniature of the thermometer for my friends the Bakers!

It's also home to the lavish Royal Hawaiian Motel.

Baker is a really grim place. I cannot imagine living there, especially as a youth.

Not anymore. Was demolished a year or so ago.

Have been through Baker many times. They used to have a "Bun Boy" restaurant near the base of the Thermometer, which was quite good. Now closed for many years.

Alien Jerky is about the only new thing there in a long time.
