Interesting Oil Observations!

My Ferrari 575 used a qt. in around 500 miles. I switched to 0W-20 Mobil 1 and it did not use a drop from that point onwards. There is a Shell study that shows better ring seal with thinner oils.

Valvoline Synpower 10-30w 5,000 miles = 3.0 quarts used
Mobil 1 0-30w 5,000 miles = ZERO quarts used

Comments?

I'm so sorry to hear. My condolences.

Mobil 1 can do some wonders for a leaky engine. My fiance's civic would use 0.5qt every 3k of PYB now with M1 there isnt a problem. Fantastic stuff.

Do you think votality has anything to do with it?

That's the conclusion I come to. It seems Mobil products always are lower in volatility compared to the other oils you used.

Your rings seated.

Have you ever seen what Ferrari does to their car as it leaves the assembly line?

They run laps around their test track with full instrumentation!

Trust me, the rings are seated from the showroom floor!

My experience has been an engine will use more oil with Mobil 1 than it did with other synthetics like PP, conventional or any other oil. Why you would have the exact opposite experience...

Good question and YES it did start using oil again.

Thinner oil X Mobil 1 X Better votality = less oil use!

Seems these 3 items above make the difference.

The problem, IIRC, according to Shell was that some (not all) oil control rings don't have enough tension to properly scrape a thicker oil.

Oops, M1 0w30 is not thinner than the other two. It's supposed to pump more easily at arctic temps though.

Partly true. It's the same, 30 weight, at operating temperature. It IS thinner, however, at startup. [See Bob's oil tutorial on the home page for details]

One vital piece of info not being clarified here, and that I'd really like to know is:

Are we talking about an actual leak (i.e., a gasket not sealing);

Or, are we talking about burn off (such as from sticking rings)?

Even though the end result is the same, the cause is entirely different, as is the treatment and potential to (permanently) stop the "leak."

You burned/leaked 3 quarts of oil in 5000 miles?

Maybe the engine finally broke in after 162,000 miles.

PCV valve.

your engine is an oilaholic and needs therapy.
