Agreed, a 1/2 qt isn't going to make any difference...
If it did, that would mean the crank is dipping into the oil on cold start, when it's all in the pan and that's not very likely... Once the engine is running and the oil is circulating the level is usually a quart, maybe two on larger engines, lower than it is with engine off...
On overfill, I've never actually seen a really bad case but before were were married, my wife used to have old Chevy Nova that used some oil... Her dad told her you have to add oil occasionally and she did, until it was 5qts overfull... Got to the point it was very sluggish... She took it to her service guy and he about died laughing when he told her what she'd done... No harm was done and she'd driven it for a few days like that...
I guess I was wrong to assume that my oil was to blame here. It's hard to describe what my car was doing and I honestly had no clue, overfilling was really the only thing that went wrong during this tune up. It must have been a spark issue that I unknowingly corrected during my inspection.
I have often wondered what a severe overfill would do to a car and I guess that the answer was nothing.

Pete, we are soo much alike it is...scary
i.e.
- we each changed our oil within a day or two of each other
- we each put in a Canadian only HDEO 0W30
- we each overfilled as well! For me I had replaced the filter only a week earlier (long story
) and so when I drained and filled a week later I forgot to take into account the already filled filter + I wanted to finish off that last bottle of oil so overall I figure I am a half litre over but I am going to leave it as is as it is too cold and too much trouble to get it just right
LOL that's cool. Was your car a GM 3800? that would be even more scary.
It's a small world I guess.
