Had to do an oil change today in my car, I though I'd share this story with you although, it's not something I'm overly proud of. This was the first oil change I've ever done where something went wrong.
I started out with the usually routine, pulled out the jack and stands, jacked car up, drained oil, took off old filter, etc. I prefilled my Carquest blue (wix) filter and put it on. I then dumped the remainder of the 5 quarts of petro Canada Duron 0w30 into the crank case. I double check that the drain plug is tight with my German torque wrench, and all seems well. didn't check the dipstick because it's always right after an oc
The car needed some more maintenance so I did this after the oil change, One thing being spark plugs. Plugs on this car are supposed to be easy but I beg to differ. 6 plugs took a heavy hour and a handful of cus words. Got that done, and other than some cuts on my arm it's all good.
Now the test drive. Start it up, starts without hesitation, just like normal. I drive down the dirt road that I live on and get to the highway. Get onto the highway and accelerate easily up to the 50 mph speed limit. Around 35 I get a horrible shudder that is making the whole car shake, I let off, nothing, get back on the throttle shakes like crazy. At this point I'm freaking out, last time I had a similar issue I was buying a new transmission. As I try to calm myself by sayying aloud that "it will be okay, you probably just broke a vacuum line or something" I swing the car around and head for home, only about 2 miles.
I get home look at everything, vacuum lines, plug wires, even pulled the maf to see if maybe I over-oiled the k%n filter on my intake. Everything is good. I was about to close the hood before I decided " ah what the [censored] I'll see what is on the dipstick" take a look It's over filled as it always is after an oil change because I never thought it would cause an issue. The oil is about 3/4" above the hash marks.
This is my last chance, to somewhat correct the oil level and hope to god that something good happens. I dig out all the riggin again and pull off the oil filter, and drain out the oil and put it back on dry. I take the car out again and it's all happy now.
Any thoughts on my somewhat intentional overfilling? Did I potentially harm my motor today?
